Director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Once more several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[2] The story was partly inspired by his own experiences as a musician in a band,[2] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of record labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan'southward character.[4] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Tin a Song Save Your Life?, earlier he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to piece of work the music around the story, instead of the other way around."[4] The script's manner of featuring songs as a natural element of the story was inspired past the 1954 Judy Garland musical film A Star Is Born, and is besides employed in Carney'due south earlier film Once (2007).[5] Carney kickoff pitched the film in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the film alongside Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose product company Exclusive Media financed the picture show's US$8 million budget.[ii]

Before casting Keira Knightley equally Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop vocalist such every bit Adele in the main office, besides every bit a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at one point attached to the project.[2] [half dozen] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role past grooming with a vocal omnibus and learning how to play a guitar.[7] Mark Ruffalo was Carney's first option for the role of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the film after Carney sent him the first typhoon of the screenplay.[6] Singer Adam Levine was too the merely person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the function after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue as an audition;[8] he declined to exist paid for actualization in the picture.[9] Although he had had modest interim parts on television before, Begin Again marked his first role in a film.[eight] Carney approached James Corden to announced in the movie afterwards admiring Corden's performance in the pb part in a Broadway product of One Man, Two Guvnors.[10]

Principal photography of the motion picture began in New York City on July 2, 2012,[11] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to picture in Manhattan's lesser known neighborhoods that would be more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Hamlet, the E Hamlet, Times Foursquare, and Washington Square Park.[13] [xiv] Rather than performing alive during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In order to save coin on hiring a total coiffure and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Foursquare—were shot belatedly at night with a handheld photographic camera.[ii] The rooftop location almost the Empire State Building is located at 28 W 36th St.[15] [xvi] [17] [18]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a series of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'south functioning and comportment while making Brainstorm Over again. When asked about the critical reaction to Sing Street by The Independent, Carney responded unprompted that "information technology's a pocket-size personal picture with no Keira Knightleys in it. It's really rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly as a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since babyhood, saying "I'll never brand a film with supermodels again." He also criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, maxim, "I merely think with Keira it was similar asking her to do something that she could non exercise."[20] Though he did not specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "experience of working, let's confront information technology, with a model on my last pic".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her afterwards Carney'south comments.[22]

Carney later tweeted a public apology proverb he felt similar "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "nothing merely professional and dedicated" during the filming of the moving-picture show.[23]

In 2019, when asked about Carney's comments, Knightley accepted his apology and revealed that she was not shocked by his earlier comments as they had not gotten along during filming.[24] [25]
